* Algae - Greek Word

* Thallophytes are biggest division of cryptogams

* Thallophytes - Algae, Fungi, Lichen, Virus and Bacteria

* Unger was the first to use the term Thallophyte


* The Study of algae is called Algalogy or Phycology

* The term algae was first used by Linnaeus (1754)


* Father of Algalogy - G.Klebs


* Father of Modern Algalogy - M.O.P.Iyangar

* Some Indian Algalogist from Tamil Nadu - V.Krishnamoorthy, M.O.P.Iyangar, T.V.Devakachari, V.Sundralingam

* Fritsch (1935) classified the whole of the algae into 11 classes on the basis Types of Pigments, Nature of the Reserve Food Material, Mode of Reproduction, etc....

* Eleven classes there are,    1.Chlorophyceae,
                                                 2.xanthophyceae,  
                                                 3.chrysophyceae, 
                                                 4.Bacillariophyceae, 
                                                 5.cryptophyceae, 
                                                 6.Dinophyceae, 
                                                 7.Chloromonodineae, 
                                                 8.Euglinineae, 
                                                 9.Phaeophyceae, 
                                                10.Rhodophyceae, 
                                                11.Myxophyceae (Cyanophyceae)


* The classification is published in this book titled "The Structure and reproduction of algae


* Linnaeus classifies the algae into Hepaticae
